Erasing. Dialogue

Erasing. Dialogue

Exhibition «Erasing. Dialogue» is a result of Russian-Swiss art-residence «Laboratory. Illustration as a reaction on political and social realms». We try to understand what place illustration takes in our world and how illustration can change it.

During the residence we discussed six topical issues:
— Freedom of speech
— Gender issues
— Ethical borders
— Civil position
— New media
— Economical context

Six participants from Switzerland, Belarus and Russia created 38 illustrations, 29 of them were exhibited, 9 were censored.

Here you can see my part in it and the work of graphic & exhibition designer Anna Karp.

Freedom of speech

You understand the truth
You know the truth
You see it, but you keep being told «Think as we command you to think»
Gender Issue

I use the character of Medusa Gorgon to concentrate attention on idea of victim-blaming. Through the centuries image of Medusa Gorgon is a depiction of ancient habit and desire to blame not abusers, but abused.
Ethical Borders

In modern world feelings of different groups of people seem to get very fragile. We can accidentally offend someone with our word or art. And more and more we feel like a bull in a china shop.
Civil Position

Its easier to hide your had in sand, like a camel-bird...
New Media

We are like astronauts hiding under helmets of our avatar images drifting by algorithms of social networks.
Economical context

«All creation is a mine, and every man a miner...»
Anna K:

«The publication is a response to the question: What’s left after the residency?

...So what’s left?
– the state of dialogue in 2 languages and of 2 languages (German & Russian)
– all censored works joined the others to keep the story full

It also addresses self-publishing to empower the voices of artists. At the same time, the works are put in no particular order to be not just illustrations for the topics discussed but rather provide the works with distance even to artists verbal and conscious input.»
